Deeper Into the Rockies

A dirt road is not the interstate. You can't pretend you are on the autobahn with the countryside flashing past at 150kph. You've left the fast lane, speed is an impossibility. Relax, take your shoes off, roll down the windows and sniff the perfumes offered by the crisp, country air.

Tiny strata... in the rock...

A nice valley down there. The paved road runs along the left side of it... the dirt road isjust a few hundred feet below me.

Dry Weathering

In the high, dry Rockies, some wood develops golden tones as it ages.

The road goes on and on. At the base of those mountains in the distance is a town called Buena Vista... That's where I'm headed today. Those clouds let out a nice rain that night.

They posted a sign, but for the life of me I can't make out what it says.

The boulders over here seem to erode into stacks of pancakes.

While the day before the boulders were plutonic solids that tumbled down hills. Here it is more level and the great stones seem to have no choice but to slump in place as they are beaten my the eons.

Angry Chipmunk

I was not alone in those woods. My presence angered one of the local chipmunks who proceeded to make it quite clear that all of these rocks I was photographing were their rocks and next time I have better ask permission first.

Stumpwood

Another example of how some wood develops beautiful colors in the high & dry Rockies. This is an upended stump with the roots sticking into the air.

A Layover Day in Buena Vista

Sometimes it's good to stop. All of those places you've been driving through... Well. People live there... Yes, they spend weeks at a time in one place... Years even, I hear tell. So if you want to feel like a real local, you have to spend at least a day in one place. I decided to settle down in Buena Vista it seemed like a nice place to call home.
Up a Winding Road and Crossing the Divide
Sep 03, 2016
I crossed the Continental Divide just to the northwest of Fitzpatrick Peak on a little dirt track called forest road 267 that runs between St. Elmo & Tincup, Colorado.

A Colorado Crawl
Aug 27, 2016
From Limon, Colorado I headed west. Back across the plains, through the forests of Ponderosa Pine. There was a bit of business to conduct in Castle Rock and then onward to the West. A dirt road "short cut" surpriosed me with this formation... Upended strata , almiost free standing!
The Windmills of Colorado
Aug 17, 2016
"The Windmills of Colorado" sounds poetic doesn't it? There are a whole lot more windmills in the Midwest since the last time I wandered through the area, Two of these pictures were taken from the ground... the rest from the air.
Wyoming

Wyoming?" You ask... "Weren't you just in Canada?" Well, um, yes... but you see... There was something I needed to get done in Wyoming,so.... "What about Montana?" You coninue, "What happened to Montana?" Montana? I love Montana, but I needed to get to Wyoming so I drove through it.

Canadian Rockies
Aug 02, 2016
I am driving through the stunning landscapes of the Canadian Rockies. They are huge! Not just in stature, but in the volume of the area, If you are looking for an "Endless Summer" experience try driving all of the roads up here. You will discover that there will be a lot of roads yet to cover by the time the Aspen & Birch trees begin to turn.
Oh, Canada!
Jul 31, 2016
Coming into Canada the second time I was asked a lot more questions. Was I headed home? Was I going to be staying down there for a while? Whatcha got in the back of the vehicle? I almost felt I was going to be given a limited hall pass: "This guy has five (5) days to get down to the States or else we will find him and ship him south ourselves." But, after all of the questions, I was allowed in with a cheerful, "enjoy your trip."
Alaska & Out

OK, so you took a ferry to Alaska, spent a few days around Haines and drove up through the Yukon to the big part of the state. What now? Well... sha... drive around, find backroads, what else?
Alaska? Alaska!
Jul 29, 2016
So Where was I? Oh yeah, I was getting on a ferry to Alaska. That was three weeks and a few thousands miles ago. Ah, the romance of the high seas... "Just give me a tall ship and a star to sail her by"...
And We're Off

Redwood trees are socialists... Or at least very friendly. Their roots are on the surface and weave into a mat that allows them to support each other and stand against the high winds that blow through the Northwest.
Spring Songbirds, Patterson California
Jun 10, 2016
This is the first field recording it put out for public consumptions. It was recorded the first week of March, 2016 in the Hills east of Patterson, Ca. It was a beautiful Spring morning and I found an acceptable location by a small brook. Birds singing in the area make it a very pretty-sounding location. Unfortunately a gravel truck bame by about every 20 minutes which limited the length of the recording.
Highway 162, the West End
Jun 05, 2016
This set of pictures is from the western end of highway 162 in California. It is a 125 mile long section of road, the greater portion unpaved, that takes you from highway 101 just south of Laytonville all of the way to Willows at Interstate 5.
A Jaunt to Nevada
Jun 04, 2016
Though San Francisco is the place to be, it was no more the place for me. It was the end of February. Time was up for my place in Pacific Heights and I wanted to get a little more distance between myself & the house remodel. My solution was to move to Fort Bragg for the remainder of the house thing. "But why, then, did you drive to Nevada?" You sagely ask. It's simple. Since we were selling the house, I needed a new mailing address.
Open House!
May 31, 2016
May 5th, the house is completed, staged and opened for sale. It was interesting seeing the house like this. It was nice seeing the house filled with furniture. Someone else's furniture. Furniture that I didn't have to move.
Wildlands of San Francisco
May 26, 2016
It is all around us and it is relentless. Right now it is working at destroying our homes and cities. While we sleep at night it is tirelessly toiling away. Overcoming everything we know. Everything we have made. Everything we will ever do. There is no escape. We are in a symbiotic relationship with it. We love it deeply and without it we will die. Yet in the long run, our species will be gone and it will overrun this world until all life is gone and there is nothing left but a burnt ember orbiting the Sun.
