Sonic Landscapes

From the time I bought my first decent microphones I seem to have had the compulsion to place them in less-than-ideal environmental conditions. From singers with halitosis to dangling them in the maw of a bubbling geyser, I have many happy memories of subjecting innocent mics to hazardous situations in search of interesting sounds. Why would a person do such a thing? I really have no idea. I suppose it is similar to fishing... just an excuse to go out into nature and do essentially nothing.... after all... there are perfectly good fish at the store.

Over the years my techniques have improved as well as my gear. A few years ago I decided to start releasing some of these under the name of "Sonic Landscapes." Some of them are simply interesting sounds... others I am editing so that they will loop seamlessly so that they can be played over and over to create restful sleep environments or some other thing. (and at the same time rack up lots of those payments of a few thousandths of a penny per play)

Volcanic Sounds of the Yellowstone Caldera
It's an Album

On one of my drive-abouts I found myself in Yellowstone National Park. it's a jolly fun place if you like that sort of thing... You know... Buffalo, trees, geysers & such. It pushes a couple of my buttons for sure. Yellowtone has wo many cool sounds that I simply had to record some of them.

Mud pots that go glurp, glurp. Little holes in the ground that sound like they are gargling. Big, deep pools that release giant bubbles of gas.... Caves at the edge of pools that belch forth great volumes of steam and water then the water flows back in for the next show. They must have good writers there for the variety is seemingly endless.   ...Read more

Low Tide at Soberanes Point, CA
Environmental Recording

Once again I found myself at the ocean with nothing better to do than subject my microphones to hostile conditions. I had been driving up and down along the coast south of Monterey looking for the right spot. I was looking for a protected cove-type location. One without a mile-long expanse of sand and giant waves from the deep ocean to come crashing in.

Nightbirds on the Noyo River
Environmental Recording

I was out on a late night walk. Late June in Fort Bragg has some nearly summer nights and this was one of them. Shirt sleeve weather – if your sleeves happen to be long and you bring along a covering for later. Rambling through town in my random fashion, I came across a logging road that came up along the Noyo River... A mile in, the road crossed the river. Standing in the middle of the bridge on that silent night I could hear the Nightbirds. Down where the river meets the sea there is a horn that blows caution to approaching vessels and I could hear how it echoed up along the river as it passed me by.

Ocean Waves at Molera Point
Environmental Recording

I'm not a surfer, though perhaps I would like to be. I like the ocean. Every time I drive out to the coast there is that moment of the first smell of it. Sometime, if the wind is just right, you can be fifteen miles away when you sense the first hint of salt and seaweed. And then there is the thrill when you rise over the hill or curl around the bend and are presented with the far-off horizon.

I'm a sucker for the sea and I really can't explain it. On a clear day it is this immense, monotonous expanse of blue. One could think of it as the most mundane and boring thing and then wonder at how something so large and mundane can evoke such a feeling... at least for me. Then again, I'm just a sucker for such a thing... I once bought 80 acres of ocean from a fellow, but lost it when a current came along. Last time I saw it, it was headed up towards Alaska.

Mosquito Lake... sound like just the place you would want to go to on vacation. And you know,Alaskan Mosquitos are even bigger than Texas mosquitos... Spring Songbirds, Patterson California
Environmental Recording

This is the first field recording it put out for public consumptions. It was recorded the first week of March, 2016 in the Hills east of Patterson, Ca. It was a beautiful Spring morning and I found an acceptable location by a small brook. Birds singing in the area make it a very pretty-sounding location. Unfortunately a gravel truck bame by about every 20 minutes which limited the length of the recording.

Way in the background, you can hear the distant roar of the surf. This location was about a mile and a half from the open sea and high tide was about an hour earlier.
