Open House!

Furniture Views and Counter Tops

May 5th, the house is completed, staged and opened for sale. It was interesting seeing the house like this. It was nice seeing the house filled with furniture. Someone else's furniture. Furniture that I didn't have to move.

Walking throush the house a week earlier was curious. All grey and white. Crown molding, mirrored closet doors. The walls were naked. The house was alien and vacant. Now, with the staging furniture, generic art and accesories it was like a diorama. A story was being told. One of the bedrooms had a crib, another was set up for an older child and a third for a teenager. My, what neat and tidy children these kids are. Perhaps there was a marketing thing going on here. But the furniture gave it balance...Suddenly all of the little things that drew my eye were obfuscated. I was distracted into seeing the bigger picture. Family Room Staged

"Wow our house turned into this." It was an interesting experience... It is basically the same structure. Larger openings. Different colored & bare walls. A giant deck...a really giant deck. It's still the house I grew up in, but the history has been wiped clean. It's a blank slate now, ready for the next family. There are little things here and there out in the yard. I hid a few items under the house... treasures for some adventurous kid someday, perhaps. But the way it is now, with stone counter tops, marble bathroom, neutral palette... It's almost too nice of a house now.

Too nice for me at least. Too nice and pretty for probably anyone im my family. You see, my family isn't really in the big part of the bell curve. We're messy... in a good way. No, we're not the Addams family. My father built Heathkit stereo gear in the 60s. He did woodworking. He built the tables, desks, dressers & cabinets in the house. My Mother was an artist and made crazy-quilts and soap and melted Eyeglass lenses into curtains and made copper enamel switch plates for the house, and... oh the projects were endless. The hall was done in New Yorker covers, Certain doors were covered with magazine covers, another was covered with pictures from seed catalogs. and the carpets during the 70s? Oh my! A Really Big Deck

Yes, we are a messy crowd. But that's what life is about, right? You can go around putting things into neat piles and tidy little rows. One day following the next until you have an army of stacks arrayed behind you. A testament to a placid & organized existence.... Or you can chase your fancy, try the next thing, follow a whim investigate a passion... even tilt at windmills, what the heck. In my family one of the inevitable side effects of how we live is a mess. Drifts of sawdust, srcaps of cloth, piles of vegetable trimmings, sprinklings of potting soil, splashes of solder. If you live life right and do a lot of things you are going to make a mess or two. Perhaps, even a glorious mess. You can't worry about staying between the lines when you are in the midst of the thing, you've just got to get at it. You can tidy up later.

We document our messes too. I take pictures of my messes. My mother did. I suspect my brother may do it too. In the last five or so years of her life my mother would collect the best images of her studio messes during the year and publish them in a calender she would then give away to friends & family. It was known as the X-Mess calendar. A celebration of the chaos of living. If you put my family into a nice house the way this one is now, the walls would quickly become perforated with thousands of holes from hanging & rehanging things. Floors would become splattered, dented and aquire holes of their own. Ceilings would have hooks driven into them for haning uncommon objects. Doors would be painted bizzare colors or get faux treatments... My mother actually burned holes in the front door so it would have just the right distressed look....

Yeah, it's not our family's house anymore. And that's a good thing. See... the job of Alex Lehr & crew was to make our house a house for anybody. Something that will appeal to the widest section of the buying market. The big part of the bell curve. A house that is comforting and unchallenging. Something with crown molding. An empty canvas ready for the next family to make a mess. Alex & Company did a great job. Over one hunderd people came through the house on the first weekend and one of them bought the place. I hope they enjoy living there.

All made up and pretty, the house for sale.

Spring Songbirds, Patterson California
Jun 10, 2016
This is the first field recording it put out for public consumptions. It was recorded the first week of March, 2016 in the Hills east of Patterson, Ca. It was a beautiful Spring morning and I found an acceptable location by a small brook. Birds singing in the area make it a very pretty-sounding location. Unfortunately a gravel truck bame by about every 20 minutes which limited the length of the recording.
Highway 162, the West End
Jun 05, 2016
This set of pictures is from the western end of highway 162 in California. It is a 125 mile long section of road, the greater portion unpaved, that takes you from highway 101 just south of Laytonville all of the way to Willows at Interstate 5.
A Jaunt to Nevada
Jun 04, 2016
Though San Francisco is the place to be, it was no more the place for me. It was the end of February. Time was up for my place in Pacific Heights and I wanted to get a little more distance between myself & the house remodel. My solution was to move to Fort Bragg for the remainder of the house thing. "But why, then, did you drive to Nevada?" You sagely ask. It's simple. Since we were selling the house, I needed a new mailing address.

Wildlands of San Francisco
May 26, 2016
It is all around us and it is relentless. Right now it is working at destroying our homes and cities. While we sleep at night it is tirelessly toiling away. Overcoming everything we know. Everything we have made. Everything we will ever do. There is no escape. We are in a symbiotic relationship with it. We love it deeply and without it we will die. Yet in the long run, our species will be gone and it will overrun this world until all life is gone and there is nothing left but a burnt ember orbiting the Sun.
Some Humble Abodes

There are uncounted scads of really nice Victorian houses in San Francisco and if I was to take pictures of the best of them I couldn't afford the film... er... hard drive space. Besides, San Francisco has many more syles of houses beyond Victorians. This a selection of a few that I have shot in the past month or so.
Fort Bragg on a Foggy Night

The fog rolls in.. It is late on a late spring night. Nothing on TV. There never is. Grab the camera & tripod... it's time to take a walk.
And a Few More Pictures of San Francisco
May 09, 2016
There are always a few left-over pictures that don't seem to fit in with any article.. I'll throw in a Batch of San Francisco images here. these are shot in all sections of the city, and are not displayed in any particular order.
California's Lost Coast
May 07, 2016
There is an area of California known as the Lost Coast. Somewhere north of Fort Bragg, south of Ferndale and west of highway 101. There are a few ways to get there but fewer people who will tell you how. Some places you can drive to, much of it is accessable only by foot if at all. It is one of the remaining places that Sasquatch can run free.
Has it really only been two weeks?
Apr 27, 2016
There is a saying that if you ask a contractor how long it will take the answer is always "Two Weeks." While that might not exactly the case there is an element of truth in it. Enough so that it stopped being funny for a bit.
San Francisco Skylines - Part Two

We all do it, some folks more than others. Perhaps your practice is utilitarian, maybe you are just following a whim, whaterver your purpose San Francisco is a great town to do it in. Even with all the hills, in fact the hills might make it better
Putting Things Back - Remodel Three Months In
Mar 24, 2016
We're not talking the Eiffel Tower here. We have no need for iron workers, cement trucks or dozens of unionized workers. This is a small little remodel. Nothing more than tearing out a wall or two and putting parts of them back, tearing out some cabinets.....
San Francisco Skylines

If you listen carefully you can hear it.... Humphrey Bogart in his best film-noir voice-over.... "They call her San Francisco... City by the Bay. She's taken many hearts... Poor saps, they think they left left'm, but they were stolen, every one."

San Francisco is a great walking town. I took a lot of long walks at pretty much any time of day or night, this piece came about through these walks.
Tear 'em Up - Remodel One Month In

We are Just over 5 weeks into this thing. There was a shocking lack of activity between Xmas and New Years, then again, everybody deserves some time off during the holidays. I just need to chill out a little.
What are you going to do in San Francisco anyhow?
Dec 28, 2015
I like San Francisco. I always have. For my first job I was a driver for a water lab. Every morning I had to drive from Redwood City to Marin (through San Francisco, of course). I had all morning to do the drive plus my lunch hour. I would often spend my lunch hour picking a new route through the city. Way too much fun to be paid for, but i took the money anyway. Now I had the opportunity to spend all day every day in the city.
The House Remodel Begins
Dec 22, 2015
Yes, given time, everything eventually gets done. The house was all packed away. We found a Realtor® & a contractor. I shoved all of my stuff away as well. Packed what I needed into a duffel bag and have come to San Francisco a for a month or so while the house gets remodeled before sale.
Playland

This one is actually part of a larger suite that I call Parlor Passages. It is intended to recall the frenetic energy energy of a children's playground. It is quite short, just over a minute a bit of brightness to be inserted in a longer ensemble.
