Low Tide at Soberanes Point, CA

SoberanesPoint

Once again I found myself at the ocean with nothing better to do than subject my microphones to hostile conditions. I had been driving up and down along the coast south of Monterey looking for the right spot. I was looking for a protected cove-type location. One without a mile-long expanse of sand and giant waves from the deep ocean to come crashing in.

I wanted to record a low tide with gentle seas slushing across the stony tide pools. I found a good spot at Soberanes point. Low tide was at at 7:30 a.m. and I arrived a bit over an hour early so I could holly gear out there and get set up with ample time.

It was a beautiful morning. A beautiful morning for fishing & when I arrived at my chosen spot there were two fellows in my chosen spot fishing. Well I wasn't going to have any of that and marched right up to them and told them that I needed the spot to make recording and they could buy fish at the market.

OK, so I didn't do that. Instead, I hopped & climbed over the rocks & found a fine, secluded place a few hundred yards off. I set up the mics at the end fo a low point fo rocks that had nice a squares deeper spot on the left and a longer stony channel on the right.

I ended up with a really nice, 2-hour+ recording with low tide about 30 minutes into it. This time I made the decision to break the giant file into 12 - 13 minute consecutive segments and publish them at as set. I had the intention of publishing them as Soberenes point: track 1, track 2, track 3... etc. you know, something logical & clear. But two weeks after submitting the package to the distributor they rejected my set declaring that the "track names in an album must be given distinctive names so the listener doesn't get confused".

Oh well... silly names, but a really nice recording.
