The Windmills of Colorado

"The Windmills of Colorado" sounds poetic doesn't it? There are a whole lot more windmills in the Midwest since the last time I wandered through the area, Two of these pictures were taken from the ground... the rest from the air. Windmills & Fields

Anyhow, along with the driving & whatnot, I'm in the midst of a programming project that has to be prioritized ahead of writing long diatribes... so just some pictures for a while until I get caught up with other stuff.

These pictures were taken near Limon, Colorado, a small town about 90 miles SE of Denver. I drove there from Castle Rock, CO. It is a lovely drive that stars out in the Rocky bits of Castle Rock then glides through miles of rolling hills covered with fragrant Ponderosa Pine which then open up into subtly terraced scrub & grasslands for the remainder of the drive. About 7 miles north of Limon, there begins a plateau where the cultivated crops are multi-tasking with the windmills. It seems they extend at least 20 miles to the north and east from there.

And, by the way, if you are ever in Limon, stay at the Safari Inn. It is beautifully maintained and updated older motel...sparkling clean, small & tidy. It is run by a couple that has owned it for 19 years. There is a pool for kids and it is very very well-priced. I can't say enough good things about this place.

While the previous week the sky had been murky & hazy a few days of strong winds & intermittent rain presented me with blue skies & fluffy clouds as a backdrop.

On one of the days I was out testing the camera drone I had fairly clear skies.

Rain & storm clouds... all of the way beyond the horizon.

The installation of windmills extends at least 20 miles to the north-east from here. This is shot from the southern edge of the plateau where the windmills are installed. On the plateau the soil is richer and is planted with field crops. In the foreground... the incline to the basin the land is used for grazing and hay.

Windmills running into the distance.

Windmills with Dramatic Sky

More stormy weather, more windmills. The clouds became progressively more interesting that day.

During the night I was out walking. The weather had moved to the east and far off I could see the lightning flash and flair into the black sky. Off to the west, storms were wreaking their violence over the rockies.

That there is millet in the foreground. a somewhat deeper green than the corn crops nearby.

And a self-portrait to boot! That little black speck next to the little grey spec at the bottom is me. This is the slope that least up to the plateau of the windmills.

A Colorado Crawl
Aug 27, 2016
From Limon, Colorado I headed west. Back across the plains, through the forests of Ponderosa Pine. There was a bit of business to conduct in Castle Rock and then onward to the West. A dirt road "short cut" surpriosed me with this formation... Upended strata , almiost free standing!
  The Windmills of Colorado
Wildlands of San Francisco

It is all around us and it is relentless. Right now it is working at destroying our homes and cities. While we sleep at night it is tirelessly toiling away. Overcoming everything we know. Everything we have made. Everything we will ever do. There is no escape. We are in a symbiotic relationship with it. We love it deeply and without it we will die. Yet in the long run, our species will be gone and it will overrun this world until all life is gone and there is nothing left but a burnt ember orbiting the Sun.
Some Humble Abodes

There are uncounted scads of really nice Victorian houses in San Francisco and if I was to take pictures of the best of them I couldn't afford the film... er... hard drive space. Besides, San Francisco has many more syles of houses beyond Victorians. This a selection of a few that I have shot in the past month or so.
Fort Bragg on a Foggy Night

The fog rolls in.. It is late on a late spring night. Nothing on TV. There never is. Grab the camera & tripod... it's time to take a walk.

California's Lost Coast
May 07, 2016
There is an area of California known as the Lost Coast. Somewhere north of Fort Bragg, south of Ferndale and west of highway 101. There are a few ways to get there but fewer people who will tell you how. Some places you can drive to, much of it is accessable only by foot if at all. It is one of the remaining places that Sasquatch can run free.
What are you going to do in San Francisco anyhow?
Dec 28, 2015
I like San Francisco. I always have. For my first job I was a driver for a water lab. Every morning I had to drive from Redwood City to Marin (through San Francisco, of course). I had all morning to do the drive plus my lunch hour. I would often spend my lunch hour picking a new route through the city. Way too much fun to be paid for, but i took the money anyway. Now I had the opportunity to spend all day every day in the city.

Some Recent Pictures

April was an interesting month. Packing things up. A few shots testing a new Canon 100-400mm lens. Of course when packing things can get messy... I knocked over a pile of empty film reels. It looked so nice I just had to take a picture.
Wyoming

Wyoming?" You ask... "Weren't you just in Canada?" Well, um, yes... but you see... There was something I needed to get done in Wyoming,so.... "What about Montana?" You coninue, "What happened to Montana?" Montana? I love Montana, but I needed to get to Wyoming so I drove through it.
Oh, Canada!
Jul 31, 2016
Coming into Canada the second time I was asked a lot more questions. Was I headed home? Was I going to be staying down there for a while? Whatcha got in the back of the vehicle? I almost felt I was going to be given a limited hall pass: "This guy has five (5) days to get down to the States or else we will find him and ship him south ourselves." But, after all of the questions, I was allowed in with a cheerful, "enjoy your trip."
